In fall of '08 our band, on tour from the east coast of CANADA had a show booked @ Artopia. We paid a $50 deposit to hold the space and was told everything was 'confirmed.' Less than a week before our show we received a message stating that the SLC Fire Marshall had deemed the space 'in question' for holding live shows, due to a capacity issue. We were told 2 days later that they had been ok'd for 50 - 60 patrons per event and that our show was a '100% go' (direct quote from LEE - THE OWNER AND OPERATOR OF ARTOPIA). When we arrived on the night of our show, after an 8 hour drive from Denver, Lee acted as if he HAD NO IDEA WHO WE WERE. Needless to say the show DID NOT HAPPEN, even though there were kids lined up to see us before we even arrived. We asked for our $50 deposit back and were written a FORGED AND INVALID CHECK which had INSUFFICIENT FUNDS (something we did NOT realize until we tried cashing it the next day, when we were out of Utah). Countless phone calls, emails, and follow ups were ignored and we were eventually blocked from all sources of contact. Lee and Artopia are nothing short of SCAMMERS!!! Steer very clear of this "venue" if you are headed towards SLC.
